Instagram Google Slide Template
When you work in public schools, you have to learn to do things on a budget. I don't have the luxury of Photoshop on my work computer, so I have to improvise. In a moment of pure desperation, I figured out that with a little thought and creative magic, I could hack Google Slides and Google Draw to do *most* of the basic graphic work I needed. Enter Instagram.
Instagram is a great way to get info out to not only students but also parents and co-workers, and the hottest trend right now is the Story feature. Stories can also be interactive: you can add a link or send out a poll (VERY useful!!). Check out the end of this post for some classroom suggestions.

Cranking out graphics can be tedious. Who has time for that? So I decided to make a template that I could quickly edit with new info when I needed it. This ended up working so well, that I made a *bunch* of templates to support my classroom, as well as all the extracurricular feeds I'm responsible for. I also made a Google Slide Template for my actual Instagram feed, my Twitter Feed, AND my Snapchat. You know, to cover all the bases.
It's so ridiculously easy, you'll wonder why the heck you didn't think of it before now.
So the magic happens in a little screen called "Page Setup." It's hiding at the bottom of the File menu.
You see that little drop-down? Change it to "Custom," and Google Slides is now under your complete command. Kinda like the Genie from Aladdin, but better.
"I wish for an endless supply of templates."
"Wish granted."
Now I have a perfectly-sized IG Story graphic (1080px by 1920px) that I can throw class information into. Because it's in my Google Drive, it's completely portable; I can access it from my phone when I'm ready to post, or I can queue up a ton of posts and use them as I need them.
Power User Tip: If you want to save even more time, you can set up Master Slides to automate even MORE steps. Create a classroom theme, and you'll look like an IG pro!
Super Power User Tip: Create a similar template using Powerpoint, insert transitions & animations, and you export animated stories instead of simple graphics!
So how can you use Instagram Stories in your classroom? Here's a few ideas to get you started:
- Send a homework reminder that links to the daily assignment
- Link to a YouTube tutorial
- Send a class poll when you need additional info (ex. cookies or cupcakes?)
- Use polls as an informal assessment to check for understanding
- Send out birthday shout outs
